Side of the Road

I found this old beauty while driving around the back roads, this weekend.  In the farmer's field, she still stands with quiet dignity.

Spring Time in Winter

I have posted about our natural springs before, but after receiving several questions about them, I decided to pay them another visit today.

Walking about thirty seconds from my front porch leaves you standing on this small ridge with this gorgeous view.  Our natural spring flows directly underneath this hillside ridge, out into waterfalls and a meandering creek.

Walking halfway down the sloping hill you run into the remnants of an old well house.  I can't imagine walking from my old farmhouse to this well to retrieve water.  Running water is such a convenience that I think we take for granted.

Water flows from various spots on this hillside.  This one has a cave entrance and although I would like to see what is inside, I have only peeked in from the outside.

Hiking down to the spring today was a cold endeavor.  Usually I take the dogs with me, but I can't have them swimming around at this time of year.

Right down the hill from the well, is the remnants of an old spring house.  When my kids were younger, we would spend many hours here collecting pieces of pottery, dishes, and old types of bottles.

Someone was very motivated to keep this tree growing along the creek bed.  The old limestone blocks are the only things keeping it in place.

Here we are at the end of the show.
The first picture was taken on the top of the ridge, that you see in this photo.

I will be linking this post up with Tom's Tuesday's Treasures.
This place is a true treasure on our farm.

Friday Randoms

Tried to take a photo while riding down the road.  Didn't quite make it......

This has always been the go-to cough remedy in our house....minus the water.
It's a sure thing.

This old schoolhouse is for sale in England.  I say...let's move in!!!

It would be pretty interesting to be this close to lava spilling out in the sea, but all I can see is how much the boat is bobbing up and down.

Leaving you with some Joe Cocker for the weekend.

Thankful Thursday

Thankful this Thursday for the attitude of great days.  Having great days because I decide they will be and accept nothing less.  Does it mean things are perfect?  No, but it does mean pressing on and making the best of each moment.

What are you thankful for this Thursday?  Share your thoughts and link up below.  I would love to hear from you.

So Go the Days

At this time of year the days seem to run into each other.

Going to work when it is dark and arriving home to darkness soon after is the norm.  Our days are starting to stretch out a bit, but not too much.

Our weather flip flops from warm one day to cold the next. Clothes on the line in January?  Yes, that happened this weekend.  My bees tried to chase me away from the line and it isn't even that close to their hive.   Today we are back to cold temps and winter coats.

Early evenings by the fire mean time to recharge for the upcoming busy springtime.

Watered Down Sunday

It's a wet Sunday here in central Kentucky.  My oldest dog is always insistent about going on walks with me.  After about fifteen minutes, we became drenched in a downpour.  After waiting a few minutes, it was over and we were back outside.

I believe my afternoon will be encompassed by finishing up the PBS series, Manor House.  If you enjoy historical accuracy, and the Edwardian time period, you will appreciate this series.  PBS has other series, such as Frontier House and 1900's House.  These are a great peek into our history as a society.

Friday Randoms

Some shadows and light at our farm's natural spring.

This church is for sale, if you are willing to move to North Carolina.

I can't imagine finding this pair on the top of my roof.

Here is a collection of tweets about Betty White, because I love Betty White.
You should too.

Leaving you with some Stevie Wonder for the weekend.

Thankful Thursday

Thankful today for my family.  I have two children who are very different, but incredibly dedicated to their endeavors.  I look at them sometimes and know, for certain, that I didn't have that kind of purpose in life at their age.  Did I mention that the husband works tirelessly?   The farm is managed, he works full time, and has spent at least a million hours sitting on a five-gallon bucket catching softballs as my daughter's catcher.

Blessed, I am.

What are you thankful for today?  Take a moment and share a post telling what you are thankful for.  It doesn't matter if it is big, little, or somewhere in between.

This and That

Yesterday had our family at home enjoying a warm day with bits of sunshine peeking through the clouds.  Quite a few bees were out and about on the farmette.

I chatted on the phone with my dad for a bit, then he said he had to go and mow the lawn.  Well, no green grass here, so some moss will have to suffice.

This sweet chickadee, and friends, were at the feeders.

Our English Pointer spent his day mending fences and doing barn chores with the Secret Agent Farmer Man.

This is what total exhaustion looks like.

Rain Drops, Windy Times, and Growing Up

Cold one day and warm the next, just another winter in Kentucky.  Strong winds this week damaged some trim on the house, with a few pieces being torn off completely.

The Christmas Star remains lit on our barn, mainly because we can't let go of the warm feelings it provides.  A small piece gave up this week and stopped working.  I think this reflects us best, as a family.  Mostly on, but slightly off.....in the best way.

The girl of the house bought her first prom dress yesterday.  It was a fun girl's day out with a lot of dressed to try on, with lunch and talking afterwards.

The young man of the house turns twenty in a couple of months.

Friday Randoms

This beauty is for sale.  I could see myself floating down the road.  Wonder if it would fit in my parking space at work?

What type of cake was all the rage when you were born?  Click right here for the answer.  I know you need that critical information.

Ben & Jerry are making Bourbon flavored ice cream.  That's right!  I think they should sell it in Kentucky first.  It's only right.

This very talented dad took some great pictures of his young sons.

Leaving you with some Postmodern Jukebox for the weekend.  Kenton Chen has a great voice!

Thankful Thursday

Thankful this Thursday for tiny messages.  One of my students saved her orange peel from lunch to make me a special message.  Just the fact she was thinking of me during her lunch break touched my heart.

It really is the little things.

What are you thankful for this Thursday?  Share a post telling about something, be it big or little, that you are thankful for.  Link back to this blog and visit others in the link-up.

Warm Memories

Over the Christmas break I took a few photos while spending time at my parent's home.  I had forgotten all about these little gems resting inside my camera.

The temperatures in the Gulf of Mexico were a warm respite from the frostiness of our farm.  In fact, it would be a welcome respite right now.

Nothing quite like watching the boats come and go while waiting for the sun to set,

I tired, in vain, many times to photograph this little fellow.  He wasn't having any of my artistic advances.

Slow, Cold Sunday

It's a slow, cold Sunday at the farmette.  Just the way I like it.  The joy of having older children is that they are on their own, on days like this.  Either with friends, or doing their own thing, it has freed me up in life for my own pursuits.

Sometimes it means an afternoon of nothing, but I enjoy the moments of nothing-ness.  They don't come very often around here.

The photo shows one of our pear trees resting during this winter season.  Taken a few days before we had snow on the ground, I know it is already contemplating spring.

Looks like a fun place to spend some time, no?  That dress on the right is pretty cute, too.

I am in love with this house and the bathtub ~ to die for.

Need some new movies/shows to watch on these cold, snowy nights?  Here are the newest videos streaming for 2017.

Here is a train trip that we can all afford, and it crosses our great country.

Leaving you this Friday with Bruno Mars Carpool Karaoke.

Thankful Thursday

Thankful this Thursday for life with all of its ups and downs.  This week a relative, close to my age, passed away after a long, and debilitating, battle with Multiple Sclerosis.

Life is precious and incredibly fleeting.  It is easy to be overwhelmed with problems and inconveniences in daily life.  Looking at the bigger picture, even for just a moment, puts it all in perspective.

Take a moment this Thursday and share what you are thankful for.  It need not be spectacular, but we should all be thankful for today.

A Family Treasure

This family farm resides not too far from my own farmette.  In fact, a portion of it borders our land.  Having been in the family for generations, it continues to be a working cattle farm and a place of respite for all family members.

If you follow the road past the house and barns, you eventually come to the family cemetery where members continue to be laid to rest.

Happy New Year

A photo straight out of my phone, as I continue to blog from an alternate location.  *sigh*

Wishing each of you the very best wishes for a new year full of health, happiness, and prosperity.
